It's been a nutty two weeks. Two think that 14 days ago today I was still in Marietta -- it seems like only a dream. 30 hours, 3 cities, 2 flights, 1 train, and a missed stop and have placed me in Karlstad, Sweden for the next 5 months. New faces, new languages, new tastes, sounds, and temperatures. I've come severely under prepared but recklessly open and am ready for anything. Friends, I've made many, new connections, I've forged them. I hope this is an opportunity to begin anew and start strong. Only time will tell, här är till Karlstad.

wow. sweden. if you run into a guy from atlanta named brian, make sure to tell him i said hi! five months— i'm guessing study abroad, right? your photography is very nice this time around, especially the first shot.
ReplyDeletethe first shot is a perfect example of what i was talking about a couple months ago when i referred to "layering", although i had a hard time getting across what i meant, this is what i meant. the foreground is perfectly in focus and the background is blurry and looks almost fake; like a painting sort of. it suits your style very well— a good use of large aperture.
the second picture has a similar feel but is less pronounced and more gradual. i dig the way it's focused closer to the camera and as you move away it becomes more mysterious and unidentifiable.
in fact, the first four pictures in this set all have the same type of set up and feel. you're experimenting with this and the results are nice. my favourite is probably of the bloke waiting on the train. can you tell me, does the sidewalk behind him ramp upwards or is this just perspective? it's pretty disorienting but in a good way.
the sky photograph is very effective, but is it one of those composite pictures? how were you able to get the sky perfectly exposed along with the sun? it seems to me like you could either get the sun overexposed or the sky underexposed. you caught that one at the right moment.
i like the portrait but it is a strange crop. it really emphasizes his shoulder. what was the orientation of the original shot?
as for the last one i have a passion for old technology, i guess it's growing up in a time period where technology moves so quickly, and we look back at these relics from our childhood and wonder where the time passed. in a way, it really didn't. the time period we are in now is really an exception in human history... in the last 200 years we have had two major technological revolutions (versus 2 or 3 over a 12,000 year period previously), the population has grown exponentially... it is a strange time in history. even as recently as the 1700s and early 1800s, the most dramatic change between a person's birth and death would be a change in political boundaries and a couple of wars... it is strange that we live in a time where things change so very quickly, it causes us to feel that we are much older than we actually are.
